Audio Effects – Compression and Ring Modulation
Author: Jason Cole
Passing through the line, we continue our series of audio effects and editing tools. In the past, some of the items we have on these effects reverb, flange, delay, and noise gate. If you enjoy dabbling in audio production, you'll enjoy the current articles. We will discuss the compression played a role in the stage production of audio. And also consider the ring modulation, which is a little more fun and flexible audio effects. Thus, in today's article, ready to learn more about compression and ring modulation. We will discuss how these effects are and why as they do.
Compression
Compressors to reduce the dynamic range of an audio signal if its amplitude exceeds a threshold. The amount of reducing the range is determined by a relationship. If the ratio is fixed to 6:1, the dB should be increased from 6 to increase the production of 1 dB at the threshold. How a compressor reduces the dynamic range is the use of a variable gain amplifier, which reduces the benefit of an audio signal. Analog compressors generally do by a voltage controlled amplifier, which reduces the gain of the power of the input signal increases. The digital compression is done by DSP (digital processing signal), and is the newest version of the effect. The main use of the compression is stronger than the music sound without increasing its maximum amplitude. Compression edge (strongest signal) can increase the gain without exceeding the limits of the dynamics of reproduction. Compression is widely used in television and radio, which received peak within the strict limits imposed by most broadcasting companies.
Ring modulation
Ring modulation is obtained by multiplying two audio signals, a signal with a simple waveform like a sine wave. They combine the two signals, out of the sum and difference of those signals. Ring modulation is related to the amplitude modulation and frequency of the mixture and produces a signal rich in harmonics. It is well adapted to produce the metal and the type of bell sounds. Modern ring modulators, such as compressors use modern digital signal processing for produce the effect. Using DSP to do, which produces an output signal mathematically perfect, some musicians who do not. You can come through with some harmonics of a ring modulator to change the frequency of the two input waveforms.
This is the third episode of my series on the effects and audio engineering. We discussed compressors and ring modulators now, a couple of very interesting effects and depth. I learned a lot about myself, I hope, too. We will continue the series indefinitely, until has no effect! I hope this has shed some light on these two incredible pieces of equipment, ultimately, make your next musical project a little more interesting and productive.
