Loggerhead sea turtles from Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is home to unique and sometimes endangered. One is the loggerhead turtle. These turtles visit Hilton Head Island beaches each summer to lay their eggs, a process that takes the mother turtle in May over an hour. It is buried about a hundred eggs in the nest and then returned to sea Sixty days later, the hatchlings emerge and their perilous journey to the ocean. Biologists estimate that only one person in every thousand hatchlings to reach adulthood. The reasons are both natural and anthropogenic. Turtle turtle hatchlings and adults are often entangled in the nets, and bright artificial lights disorient. The turtles are relatively defenseless and more babies are eaten by predators before reaching the coast.

Loggerhead sea turtles, like all sea turtles are reptiles that have adapted to live in the ocean. Instead of legs, these creatures have powerful front and rear wings that allow them to drive smoothly through the ocean. Its shell is made horny plates called shields, and the upper shell, or carapace, is usually red and the bottom shell or plastron is yellow or brown off.

These turtles live in temperate and subtropical waters, which explains why the ocean near Hilton Head Island is an ideal place for them, especially with they like to feed in the bays and coastal waters. Except for the egg-coated, these turtles never leave the ocean and spend most of their time feeding on molluscs, crabs, mussels and clams.

These animals are endangered and Hilton Head Island encourages its residents and visitors to do their part to protect them. You can do this by cleaning up trash and debris from the beach, taking care to observe the turtles from a distance so as not to disturb nesting sites, and most importantly, making light. Discourage the artificial light of the nesting female turtles, sea turtles and hatchlings can be confused by the lights buildings and streets near the beach. The town of Hilton Head Island requires that all lights in the structures that are visible from the beach to be protected or disabled after 10 pm, on May 1 to October 31 for this reason.

When you visit the island, do not be looking for these unique animals, and follow the advice above to help ensure to continue to make Hilton Head their home for years to come.
