Vinyl is back – an interview with Jeff Loos retreat Documents

Author: Robert Benson

Vinyl is back. Since the "error" by an employee of Fred Meyer (LP's, which were ordered by mistake), major retail storage electronic stores Best Buy vinyl in some great artists and secure the release of records, the resurgence is upon us.

And in the heart of America, the files are a product. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jeff Loos, owner of decline Documents target = "_blank"> (www.BacktrackRecords.com) located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Documents setback has been the sale of vinyl records in Lincoln for over 16 years mainly as an online entity. However, the "brick and mortar" store is a busy, bustling scene quality vintage LP's, with a special focus on 60 of the music scene.

We will explore setbacks with the owner Jeff Loos:

Read vinyl resurgence, what is your take on this "new love" folder?

"First, folders, never left, which has been pushed to one side because of all the hype on a CD," explains Jeff. "Then we discovered The CD is not all they have to be hyped and the price is never, as it claimed and binary digital sound. "

"The industry will continue to press records during this period, except that it was a much smaller scale. People who still owned the decks of the average price range of high quality and always knew that a record of criminal LP was higher than the CD in the sound, if the record is an analogue media, which are almost all. "

"We had a shop for over ten years from 1988-2000 and went to the World-Wide Web and decided, after seven years to reopen the store. I'm glad we did, because I come from clients and increased I ask what they have done in the past seven years and nearly all those who say they still spin vinyl, and are happy, we are back open (which is devoted customer). In addition, we have made many new friends around the world, who love the sound of records over CD's. The countries of United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Holland, Spain, Japan, Australia, etc, are all pressing and selling vinyl.

"I'm very surprised that almost all those of my clients know that vinyl is analogue and digital CDs, rather than knowing the difference analog is a continuous sound wave and the CD are taken and cut into pieces. This can be much more but I do not want to do this, but you can just Google it to analog or digital, and can give you the real scoop. "

"Finally, I can say that most of the major record companies are pushing and pressing again while not, but a lot of great artists. Recently, I just bought the new "door" box set, and it sounds great (what a great job by Bernie Grundman Mastering Engineer and founder Jac Holzman of Elektra Records producer Bruce Botnick and doors made in this box). The "Complete Clapton" is a large box, hence the "Journey of Wilbury" new version. Other "Led Zeppelin" is ready. The pressure is usually a brief impression, if not leave any doubt that aside, because some of these deserve our support as much as some of the originals. "

What is the sound of vinyl is better as a CD or digital format?

"LP's vinyl (analog), is due mainly LP's sound better than CDs. It is a real acoustic wavelength against digital bits, the distance between each sample little. The game system of your files is very important and there are a number of variables that play a role in the sound they hear. Energy source, turntable, all speakers and more come into play, may very deep and costly if you want to go to high-end equipment, "says Jeff.

I refer to the digital sound as good binary "Is this a good comparison, during the debate digital vs analog sound?

"From what I understand is that if we take an urgent analogue and tried converting from birth to a computer, you must first go through a process of converting binary numbers, so the computer can play. So I would say that yes your right to say that digital sound is a bit of his bits, "said Jeff.

I guess you've accumulated a collection, what are some of your favorites in your collection?

"In fact, when I opened my shop in 1988, I promised myself and the store was the first store. And I paid my rent would like to buy more inventory for a better store. So really, I have no great collection for myself. I have my favorite bands like the Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, you will have the classical idea of rock. "

When did the business and why continue this kind of detail?

"I have a degree in the schools and teachers can not find a teaching job in the field in the years 1970 / 80, so I decided to open a retail store. I always liked "bargain" in the records of Lincoln and a friend of the owner of the mines and moved the store in Omaha and said why not to open a store in Lincoln, and we did. It's a fun job, but it is hard work. Clean thousands of documents by hand, takes very little time and patience. The love for music and customers are by far the most interesting part of the job. That always seems to be a challenge or find that rare record or find someone new vinyl is pressed. "

I always say to people to "feel" and the increase of adrenaline I get when "digging box" are his thoughts on the collection?

"It's like Easter egg hunt for me. I'm still thumbing through stores during the holidays looking for that rare find, detailed Jeff. "I always seem to see 60 or 70, I have not seen in the past. There are tons of groups who have only one or two albums and its very good, but only a handful people know about them and the radio did not play his music. There are many large groups that are otherwise banda what is happening forever. Watch the "Traveling Wilbury's" and all the bands these guys have played in "

With regard to presentation, the classification methods when using folders you sell?

"The Internet is the place of hard materials at the store level because I leave the record open for buyers to inspect. I try to be strict in the classification, because I hate having returns. On the Internet, we will record and grade coverage M – (very clean, sounds and looks like a new record), VG + + (small as possible, but my goodwill, or $ 1.00). "

Is there a genre of music (ie blues, jazz, etc) which is the most sold in his shop, which is "hot" right now?

"I'd say the rock is the best now. Colegio young baby boomers, all seem to be reading this. Jazz and blues have their own but I must stay with the rock, "said Jeff.

What is your inventory online?

Our online inventory is approximately 6000 records, I added a little more, but since we opened the retail store, so it was a little late on the database to our inventory. We just over 15,000 items in the store.

What about selling on eBay, which has had experiences, good or bad?

"EBay is very good for what they do, but do not sell much there. I some high dollar and moved to eBay but I do not sell all of $ 8.00 to $ 15.00 recordings. Prefer to sell on our site target = "_blank"> www.backtrackrecords.com or target = "_blank"> or www.MusicStack.com target = "_blank"> www.Gemm.com, "explains Jeff.

What is the best search history "it has always been a part of?

"One of the best is an original 1958 Buddy" Butcher Cover "of the 2nd version situation. "

Where do you see vinyl in five years?

"Five years from now I see vinyl of their own farm on the market, "said Jeff." tube high-end equipment at the scene seems to come more and more. The audiophile market seems to continue. Companies are constantly trying to make the best analog sound. The "doors" package is a good example. The vinyl of this mix of sounds is better than the originals, because they using new technologies. Life is good when the sound continues to improve. Remember that some people just play music, while others listen to music, There is a big difference. "

What is the difference between a folder and a sound "regular" registration?

"A record of sound is better equipped to control the control of mobile plant, such as loyalty, Classic Records, as the speakers and the Horn, "explains Jeff." Many of the United States records are dominated at home and pressed plants RTL. The people, who have dominated the recording, production and engineering are very important. Also, many companies are currently at 180 grams and 200 grams of vinyl assert a beautiful plate makes a big difference. Companies also use virgin vinyl that helps. Do not forget Many of the end of 50 and 60 entries have been taken very seriously when it comes to sound. Mercury is mercury Presence of Life "series," RCA living presence "" London Blue "and" Columbia SAX Series.

Studies on a regular sound midrange platinum, high-end dishes and equipment records of high quality. You lose money on their hard-earned cash, if you play a recording of high quality at a low range of platinum.

Hence, you have, vinyl records are back and have learned the reason why, from a man with his hand on the pulse of the resurgence of vinyl. Hopefully, the music remains what it is, and if the record companies and musicians really care about the well, the vinyl live forever.
